Q&A with Designer Mignonne Gavigan

Q&A with Designer Mignonne Gavigan

I recently had the pleasure of attending a fabulous Mignonne Gavigan trunk show, and was so inspired by the stunning scarf necklaces on display that I just had to share them with you, dear readers! An absolute treasure trove, the eponymous accessories collection features a variety of ornately detailed and beautifully hand-made scarf necklaces (genius concept!), suited for any occasion or ensemble from brunch with the girls to a black tie event with your hubby. I'm currently lusting after the chic fringe of the Petite Le Marcel! And so, I'm delighted to share a Q&A with the designer herself, as well as some of her exquisite beaded pieces.

Why did you create a line of scarf necklaces?
I have a background in fashion - I studied at Parsons Paris and Parsons New York most recently was a Senior Footwear designer at Loeffler Randall - and throughout my tenure, I’ve always had it in mind to launch a line of my own. I first created my signature beaded chiffon scarf necklace in early 2009. The idea was born when I draped a ripped piece of an embellished vintage gown around my neck. I soon realized the impact the ornate beauty of couture gowns could have on an everyday outfit in the form of accessories, and the rest is history!

Where are the scarf necklaces made?
Each scarf necklace is handmade in Mumbai, India by skilled craftsmen who also do beading for Oscar de la Renta, Balmain, Carolina Herrera, Dried van Noten, and Dolce Gabbana. The craftsmen come from long lines of fathers teaching their sons the trade and them teaching their sons, etc.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I find inspiration everywhere! From the city I live in, to the thread work in vintage finds, to the intricate details in my mother-in-law’s turn of the century beaded purses.

Which scarf necklace is your favorite and why?
Oh man, this is a tough question! I have a new favorite every week, and this week the Baby Blue Layne has been on my radar as it seems to go with everything I want to wear right now!

Who are your style icons?
Taylor Tomasi Hill, Cate Blanchett, and Shala Monroque.

What advice do you have for budding entrepreneurs?
If it’s hard, it’s worth doing, being persistent at and accomplishing. Also, never go into business with someone without a signed contract clearly stating what each person expects from the situation.
