Handbag Etiquette for Work and Play

Pinterest
Hello dear readers! I have a riveting little trivia tidbit to start out today's post: According to Vogue, in 1956, "Princess Grace Kelly used one of her two favorite Hermès bags to shield her pregnancy from the prying eyes of the paparazzi. Though the bag in its original form had been known as the Sac à Dépêches since 1935, it was renamed “the Kelly” after photographs of her favorite battered bag make it into Life magazine." In the spirit of the chic, loyal, and coveted accessory we all know as the handbag, I thought it the perfect opportunity to share some handbag etiquette pearls of wisdom. Enjoy!

Learning the Lingo
During a business meeting with a VP from Neiman Marcus several years ago, I learned the proper terminology is handbag as opposed to purse.

Tote vs. Clutch
Totes, shoulder bags, and larger handbags are perfect for everyday use, while clutches (good things come in small packages!) are reserved for special occasions such as weddings, evenings out, black tie events, etc.

Handbag Placement
Refrain from placing your handbag on a table or hanging it on the back of a chair. If you have a tote, consider using a handbag hook or placing it on the empty chair next to you if possible (if these options don't exist, you may place it on the floor, but be sure to sanitize the bottom later!). If you have a clutch, place it either in your lap or behind you in your chair.

Carrying Your Handbag
Carry your handbag or clutch on your left so your right hand is free for socializing and greeting others.
