Gracious Guest Etiquette

Pinterest
As holiday party invitations begin to trickle in, many of you will be decorating your calendars with an array of celebratory soirees, including extended visits to dear friends and family. Attending a party or staying at someone's home is so much more than accepting their invitation, it's a true privilege and opportunity to shine like the gorgeous star that you are! So you can be your most fabulous self, here are my top 10 gracious guest etiquette tips for parties and overnight stays. Enjoy!

PARTY GUEST
  1. Be on-time: Punctuality equals respect, so strive to arrive within 10-15 minutes of the start time.
  2. Bring a hostess gift: Rule of thumb is never show up empty handed so bring a small gift for your host or hostess to show your gratitude. Check out my hostess gift guide for inspiration!
  3. Indulge in the spread and monitor your cups: Since your host or hostess has taken the time to coordinate (or even prepare!) divine sips and snacks, enjoy the spread. Just be mindful not to bogart the buffet or have too many cocktails, and monitor your limits.
  4. Mingle and be a great conversationalist: Keep conversation light and jovial (it is a party after all!) and work the room chatting with both new and old friends.
  5. Write a thank you note: Within two weeks of the party, write a hand-written thank you note sharing thoughtful details about the party and thanking your host or hostess.

HOUSEGUEST
  1. Be clear how long you'll stay: Chat with your host to select dates (including arrival and departure time) that are convenient for both parties and be sure not to overstay your welcome beyond the agreed upon time frame.
  2. Bring a hostess gift: Just as with a party, bring a small gift for your host or hostess to show your appreciation for having you at their home.
  3. Follow your host's lead and respect house rules: When you arrive, kindly and gently inquire about what time everyone wakes up, the plans (if there are any) for the day, etc. and follow your host's lead. That way, if your host is the "early to bed early to rise" type, you too can be on this schedule and be respectful of their preferences.
  4. Lend a helping hand and be tidy: Whether cooking dinner or washing the dishes, offer to help your host or hostess. They may tell you not to lift a finger, however they will dearly appreciate the offer. When the stay has come to an end, be sure to leave your room and bathroom as you found it - tidy!
  5. Write a thank you note: Within two weeks of your stay, write a hand-written thank you note sharing thoughtful details about the weekend and thanking your host or hostess for their hospitality.
